All-Seminary Seminar on Sexism

April 9, 2018 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

All IR students, staff, and faculty are expected to attend. (DL students will have a seminar in May during Intensives)

The seminar will focus on two main goals:

Find common language and understanding for dynamics related to sexism, power, and agency. Through our Title IX efforts and training, we’ve worked towards having a common understanding of sexual harassment. In addition to that, we’d like to have a shared sense of how to understand and talk to each other about some of the harder to name dynamics related to sexism.

Think about these realities and dynamics through the lens of the Christian faith. As a Christian community, we want to understand the layers of brokenness in our midst as well as the calling God has for our community to be a place marked by loving God and loving our neighbors as ourselves in just the way that Jesus both taught and demonstrated in his matchless life.

Dr. Sarah Kornfield has agreed to facilitate this seminar. Dr. Kornfield serves as a faculty member in the Communications and Women’s and Gender Studies Departments at Hope College. With a Ph.D. in Communication and Women’s Studies from Penn State University, combined with undergraduate and teaching experience at Wheaton College, Dr. Kornfield is well-equipped to help move us towards these two main goals.
