About Jessica
| Jessica Stovall serves as Assistant Professor-in-Residence of Counseling. Jessica earned a Master of Arts in counseling with a specialization in marriage and family counseling and a Master of Theology from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS). She is currently pursuing a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at NOBTS. Before joining the faculty at Western Theological Seminary, Jessica taught undergraduate psychology at a small Baptist college in Georgia. She designed and taught the college’s first course on understanding trauma and abuse.
Jessica has served as a counselor in both private practice and college campus settings. She has also served as a clinical supervisor to masters-level counseling trainees. She approaches counseling, supervision, and teaching from a relational and trauma-informed perspective with consideration of systemic and developmental influences on the individual. |
Jessica is a member of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS) and has served on the CAPS East regional board since November 2022.
While Jessica has lived in various states throughout the southern United States before moving to Michigan, she primarily grew up in North Arkansas. During her undergraduate studies in Arkansas, Jessica sensed a call to the counseling ministry. Jessica spent three summers volunteering with a social justice-oriented non-profit organization in Thailand. This experience gave her the opportunity to see how mental health professionals could be used by God to bring hope and healing to the lives of those who have experienced suffering, trauma, and marginalization.
| AREAS OF EXPERTISE
Professor Stovall’s research interests include relational power dynamics in clinical supervision, supervisee nondisclosure, and accountability in professional and lay counseling practices. Jessica has experience counseling individuals, couples, and families in both urban and rural contexts. |
