About Western Theological Seminary

Western Theological Seminary (WTS) is a Christian theological seminary affiliated with the Reformed Church in America. Located in Holland, Michigan, WTS offers 12 graduate programs online, in residence, in English, and Spanish, for women and men preparing for faithful Christian ministry. Home to the Eugene Peterson Center for Christian Imagination and the Center for Disability and Ministry, WTS is committed to providing excellent theological education and forming students spiritually. WTS was founded in 1866 when seven of the eight members of Hope College’s inaugural graduating class wished to become ministers and petitioned the RCA to allow them to complete their education in Holland.

A new academic year is quickly approaching at Western Theological Seminary, and we are looking forward to welcoming students both in-person and online. Whether you are a new or returning student, we are praying that this year is filled with growth, connection, and a deepening of your calling. Here are 11 pieces of advice and encouragement from our Student Life team to help you navigate the year with confidence and purpose.

  1. Take advantage of the bounty of West Michigan–ask a staff member about when and where to pick fruit.
  2. Introduce yourself. You’re new, and so are so many other students. Introducing yourself is the first step to making friends and feeling at home, so go for it.
  3. Get the student ID! Not only will you be able to check out resources in the library, but you will be able to show your student ID to receive discounts all over the place.
  4. Find three study spots that work for differing study moods, and when studying is difficult, move locations.
  5. Buy used books. Oftentimes, used books come with highlighted and underlined sentences and paragraphs. This comes in handy when you need to get through content quickly.
  6. Learn by loving those not like yourself.
  7. When you’re on campus, bring a coffee cup or a mug. You’ll never regret being eco-conscious.
  8. Find a northside beach to watch the sunset when you need a reset after a long day.
  9. Don’t be afraid to ask a question. Most likely, there are three to four other people in the room who are also wondering about the same thing that you are. The best learners are curious, just go for it!
  10. Make your education your own. Brainstorm ideas for alternate assignments that can be personalized to your interests and calling.
  11. Form a study group. It’s harder to work through a study guide by yourself. It’s easier to add content with a group of people. Remember, if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go further, go with others.
