In Memory of Dr. Fred Johnson
It is with both tremendous grief and deep gratitude that we remember Dr. Fred Johnson, historian, teacher, veteran, alumnus, and cherished member of the Western Theological Seminary community. Fred’s life embodied faith in action, intellect grounded in compassion, and a commitment to service that enriched every circle he entered.
For more than a decade, Fred’s influence stretched from the classrooms of Hope College to the halls of Western, where his wisdom, humility, and warmth left a lasting imprint on students, faculty, and the greater community alike.
Fred followed his calling to become a historian after careers in business and the military, believing that the classroom was not a retreat from the world but a place to confront it with honesty and hope. Through his teaching, especially in the Hope-Western Prison Education Program, he illuminated the deep racial and social divisions that have shaped America and helped students imagine healing and reconciliation. His courses Civil War America and The Black Church invited students to move beyond despair toward understanding the power of faith in confronting injustice and forging community.
As a successful, eloquent, and deeply embodied Black scholar, Fred became a mentor and role model to countless students, particularly those who had never before seen someone who reflected their own identity and potential in positions of academic leadership. His presence opened doors of imagination, showing what was possible for students of color and modeling the dignity of a life devoted to truth, service, and justice.
His deep Christian faith shaped all he did. While excelling as a professor at Hope College, he came to Western Theological Seminary to deepen his understanding of faith and pursue his Master of Divinity, graduating in 2015 and later serving as a valued member of our Board of Trustees. A veteran and lifelong servant of his country and community, Fred lived out his faith through integrity, courage, and love for others.
From President Felix Theonugraha:
“Fred was the ultimate encourager. He didn’t just see potential in people, he made it his mission to bring that potential to life. He believed in the best of people, even when they might not yet believe in themselves. He loved our seminary community deeply, and his contributions in our classrooms and on our Board will be dearly missed. His impact and his life will be remembered here at Western Theological Seminary.”
Though Fred has gone home to his Lord and Savior, his presence endures as part of the great cloud of witnesses who continue to inspire us to seek truth, pursue justice, and embody inclusion in all we do.
May Dr. Fred Johnson rest in peace and rise in glory.
