About Western Theological Seminary

Located in Holland, Michigan, WTS offers 16 graduate programs online, in residence, in English, and Spanish for women and men preparing for faithful Christian ministry. WTS was founded in 1866 when seven of the eight members of Hope College’s inaugural graduating class wished to become ministers and petitioned their denomination to allow them to complete their education in Holland. Since that time, WTS has been preparing women and men for a lifetime of ministry all around the world in many ministry and denominational contexts.

Western Theological Seminary is pleased to announce Dr. H. T. “Hanny” Wuysang’s appointment as the new Assistant Professor of Counseling. With over a decade of experience in clinical mental health counseling, counselor education, and cross-cultural ministry, Dr. Wuysang brings deep expertise in multicultural counseling and spiritual formation to this pivotal role.

Originally from Indonesia, she grew up as a domestic third-culture individual in a Christian ministry family. As a counselor and teacher, she loves integrating her counseling background with her faith to help people in ministry. Dr. Wuysang holds a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Western Michigan University and an MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Wheaton College. She is a licensed professional counselor in Michigan.

“Dr. Wuysang’s perspective and clinical wisdom will enrich our students’ preparation for diverse ministry contexts. Her academic background and heart for global service embody WTS’s mission to form women and men for ministry” said Dr. Keith Starkenburg, Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

She most recently served as Counselor at ALONGSIDE Cares Ministry in Michigan, where she provided individual, marital, and group counseling focused on cross-cultural issues while teaching wellness seminars.

“I am deeply honored to join the faculty at WTS. As someone shaped by cross-cultural transitions, as an immigrant from Indonesia and a clinician who works with those called to vocational ministry (domestically, cross-culturally, and globally), I walk alongside people navigating trauma, life transitions, and the deeply human questions that arise with a call to serve the Lord wholeheartedly. I’ve come to believe that counseling is a sacred space where God’s redemptive story meets human suffering. WTS’s commitment to forming counselors who are not only clinically skilled but spiritually attuned and relationally grounded resonates deeply with my own calling. I look forward to walking alongside students as they grow not just in competence, but in Christlike presence and humble, hope-filled compassion.”

At Western Theological Seminary, Dr. Wuysang will teach in counseling, spiritual formation, and multicultural ministry, equipping students to offer compassionate care in churches and communities worldwide. Her scholarship includes research on international student acculturation and mental health in missions, with presentations at national conferences like ACES.

Dr. Wuysang will join the WTS community in Fall 2026.
