This past fall, Dr. Wesley Hill joined the Western Theological Seminary faculty as an Associate Professor of New Testament. Prior to joining the faculty at Western Theological Seminary, Dr. Hill taught New Testament at Trinity School for Ministry in Ambridge, Pennsylvania.
While Dr. Hill was working on his Ph.D. at Durham University in the UK, he joined the Church of England and began to discern a call to ordination. He was ordained this past September and now works at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as an Episcopal priest. One of Dr. Hill’s favorite things about his hometown is visiting the art and children’s museums with his godchildren. He considers himself a lifelong learner, and one of his interests is cultivating curiosity about new things.
Dr. Hill enjoys working with seminary students. He cares deeply about students’ academic learning and growth, but what means the most to him is preparing students for their vocations. Dr. Hill brings a passion for integrating pastoral questions with a serious study of the Bible to the classroom. Studying the Bible, as Dr. Hill explains, “is not just about historical backgrounds and criticism; it’s about how we use scripture in preaching and in counseling.”
Bringing ministry questions to the Bible is key, along with allowing students to discover relevant and practical wisdom from scripture for their ministry contexts.
Dr. Hill plans to be involved in several different projects in the near future. One project includes research and writing on the season of Easter in the Church calendar, offering small reflections on the liturgies, prayers and Saints remembered for that season.
Dr. Hill continues to reside in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. He commutes throughout the week to spend time in Holland, Michigan, and teach at Western Theological Seminary. While in Holland, he was pleasantly surprised by how close Western is to Lake Michigan and to downtown Holland, where it’s easy to grab a coffee or meal with students and faculty. Dr. Hill loves to be asked about his Maltese Yorkie mix dog, Karl Bark.
