Western Theological Seminary announces two key academic leadership appointments following the departure of Dr. Kristen Deede Johnson, who has accepted a new role as Principal of Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto. Dr. Johnson will conclude her service at Western on June 30, 2025.
Dr. Keith Starkenburg, a 2000 graduate of Western Theological Seminary, has been named Interim Dean and Vice President of Academic Affairs. He earned his PhD from the University of Virginia. He joined Western’s faculty in 2022 after 14 years at Trinity Christian College, where he also served as Director of New Faculty Formation for three years.
In his interim role, Dr. Starkenburg will oversee the academic administration of the seminary, including the supervision of faculty and academic staff, management of academic programs and policies, and advancing a shared vision for theological education. He brings a creative intellect, pastoral presence, and deep institutional insight to this role—gifts essential in navigating the evolving landscape of global theological education.
Additionally, beginning July 1, 2025, Dr. John Brogan, in addition to his existing teaching load, will serve as Dean of Faculty. Dr. Brogan has been a valued member of Western’s faculty since 2013. He previously served as Dean of Students and Student Life, and as the Marvin and Jerene DeWitt Professor of Religion at Northwestern College. He holds graduate degrees from the University of Michigan and Bethel Seminary (MN) and earned his PhD from Duke University.
As Dean of Faculty, Dr. Brogan will lead faculty development, support a vibrant academic community, and collaborate on faculty recruitment, retention, and review processes. His new role will help sustain the seminary’s academic excellence and strong faculty culture.
Western Theological Seminary gives thanks for the leadership of Dr. Johnson and extends prayerful support as she embarks on this new chapter. The seminary community is also grateful for Dr. Starkenburg and Dr. Brogan’s willingness to serve during this significant transition period.
