About Western Theological Seminary

Located in Holland, Michigan, WTS offers 16 graduate programs online, in residence, in English, and Spanish for women and men preparing for faithful Christian ministry. WTS was founded in 1866 when seven of the eight members of Hope College’s inaugural graduating class wished to become ministers and petitioned their denomination to allow them to complete their education in Holland. Since that time, WTS has been preparing women and men for a lifetime of ministry all around the world in many ministry and denominational contexts.

Western Theological Seminary announces that Andy Bast, Director of Development and Church Partnerships, will step into a new role as leader of the Words of Hope development team in early 2025. Andy will succeed Todd Schuiling, who is retiring.

Words of Hope is a global ministry dedicated to spreading the gospel through devotionals and evangelism, particularly in persecuted Christian areas. WTS and Words of Hope have a long history of partnership. Most recently, Words of Hope has translated some of Dr. Han-luen Kantzer Komline’s lectures into Persian, bringing theological education to Christians in Iran.

Andy’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter of dedicated service to Western. He was key in advancing the seminary’s mission and strengthening relationships with churches and supporters.

During his tenure, Andy brought a heartfelt commitment to fostering partnerships that further the seminary’s mission of equipping leaders for ministry. His leadership and relational focus have been instrumental in cultivating a community of generosity and support that continues to sustain Western’s mission.

“Andy has been a gift to Western Theological Seminary, and we are profoundly grateful for his years of excellent and dedicated service,” says President Felix Theonugraha. “His passion for connecting people with our mission and his deep love for the church has left an indelible mark. While we will miss his presence, we are thrilled to see him continue to serve God’s kingdom in this exciting new role with Words of Hope.”

To honor and express our gratitude, Western will host a reception on Wednesday, January 15, from 3:00-4:30 in the Cook Library at Western Theological Seminary. All members of the Western community are invited to join us in thanking Andy for his service and wishing him well in his next chapter.

We also invite friends, colleagues, and supporters to send Andy a word of thanks or encouragement. Messages can be emailed to Evonne Wernlund at evonne.wernlund@westernsem.edu. These will be compiled and shared with him as a token of appreciation for his impactful ministry at Western.

As Andy transitions to his new role with Words of Hope, we celebrate his continued commitment to advancing the gospel and pray for God’s blessing in his future endeavors.
