About Western Theological Seminary

Located in Holland, Michigan, WTS offers 16 graduate programs online, in residence, in English, and Spanish for women and men preparing for faithful Christian ministry. WTS was founded in 1866 when seven of the eight members of Hope College’s inaugural graduating class wished to become ministers and petitioned their denomination to allow them to complete their education in Holland. Since that time, WTS has been preparing women and men for a lifetime of ministry all around the world in many ministry and denominational contexts.

By Western Theological Seminary

Western Theological Seminary bids a grateful farewell to Dr. John Brogan, a dedicated servant leader whose profound influence has shaped students, colleagues, and the wider church for many years. After joining WTS in 2013, he served faithfully as Dean of Faculty, Professor of New Testament, and Director of the Master of Divinity and Master of Arts Programs. He was always guided by a deep love for the church and a passion for forming the next generation of Christian leaders.

Dr. Brogan’s journey in theological education and administration is marked by excellence and versatility. Before arriving at WTS, he spent eight years at Northwestern College in Iowa as Vice President of Student Development, Dean of Students and Student Life, and a member of the religion faculty from 1997 to 2005, where he chaired the department from 2002 to 2004 and held the Marvin and Jerene DeWitt Professor of Religion endowed chair. In 2000, he received Northwestern College’s Teaching Excellence Award. Earlier roles included teaching at Calvin College, Palm Beach Atlantic University, Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina, Meredith College, and serving as a visiting scholar at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia.

His academic credentials are equally impressive: a PhD in New Testament and Christian Origins from Duke University, an MDiv from Bethel Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, and an MA in Modern Middle Eastern and North African Studies from the University of Michigan. A published author and frequent presenter on New Testament textual criticism, Dr. Brogan has enriched academia with his rigorous scholarship.

What truly sets Dr. Brogan apart is his commitment to the New Testament vision of God’s kingdom characterized by diversity, justice, reconciliation, ecological hermeneutics, racial reconciliation, social justice, and cross-cultural understanding. This passion has not only informed his teaching but also his pastoral presence, as he walked alongside alumni in their ministries and service. His warmth, steady administrative hand, and unwavering support have made him an integral member of the WTS community.

Dr. David Stubbs, a longtime colleague, captures this beautifully:
“In his many years here at WTS, John Brogan has been a true pillar of our community, in the deepest sense of that phrase. His hard work, insight, scholarship, teaching abilities, administration, and warm and caring actions have strongly and consistently held up our community through good and difficult times. In all his professorial, administrative, and communal roles one could always count on John to help do whatever needed to be done, to do it well, and to do it with grace and hospitality. I’ll miss his friendship, wisdom, love for our students, and steady administrative hand. God bless John Brogan!”

“Dr. Brogan is a true institutional citizen” adds President Felix Theonugraha. “He brings to his work a rare combination of pastoral care, institutional awareness, steady conscientiousness, and genuine humility. He has served with utmost distinction and a readiness to do whatever is most needed by the institution at any time. We will miss him dearly.”

As Dr. Brogan steps into retirement, we celebrate his remarkable contributions to scholarship, leadership, and the seminary’s life. Western Theological Seminary extends heartfelt gratitude for his faithful service and prayers for joy, rest, and new adventures in this next season.
